The outer glass shattered on my GE oven and I was told I could still operate the oven because the outer glass is just cosmetic. Is this true?

yes and no.it is also to stop you being exposed to the direct heat in the oven.the outer glass will be at a lot lower and safer temperature than the inside glass which could be as high as 275 deg celcius.its a safety hazard and I would never advicate using it in such a condition
