Where is the thermostat located in a 1993 VW Golf 1.8 Sport?

I need to replace the thermostat on my 1993 VW Golf 1.8 Sport but are not sure where it is located. Can anyone assist?

end of bottom radiator hose,near alternator

it is located right at the front of the engine down under the water pump,the bottom hose comes off it.assuming it is an 8 valve.
