How do I remove the gear knob on a 2004 Renault Grand Scenic II?

I need to replace the gear knob and don't really want to pay Renault to do what should be a simple job - hopefully?
Logically it should unscrew but it doesn't seem to want to!
Any thoughts or advice gratefully received.
