we have ceiling light pull switch which works now and again it usually jams or only works on third pull - have unscrewed to look at interior but there looks to be nothing wrong ormissing
make sure its not a bad connection by giving the cables a little tug. but to me it sounds like the need a new pull cord. they are cheap and easy to connect

Once they start acting up, they are generally not repairable. You need to replace it. Before you remove it however ensure that you have removed power from it at the Consumer Unit and made a careful note of what wire goes where.
