When the dishwasher is switched on the programe selector lights flash on then off so that a programe cannot be selected and the warning signal sounds constantly

our dishwasher would switch on, the lights would flash and it would beep for about 30 seconds and you could not select a programme, we disconnected it from the water and power, we turned it onto its side (make sure it is emptied of water). connected it back up and it worked no problems.
