2003 Ford Fiesta Sudden Battery failure?

Drove my Fiesta from Lancashire to Cambs with one stop of 10 minutes. Suddenly the battery light went on - lights lost power so I pulled over.
When recovery came, car started again straight away and battery light went out!
Really annoying. What happened? Fan belt? Alternator? Have only just bought the car second hand!
