how to repair a damaged table top that melted the finish approx 8"?

I believe someone spilled nail polish remover on my dining room table. It is a cherry finish, solid wood. The finish has melted through the protective top glaze down to the stained wood. How can it be repaired? The melted finish is very tacky.

The same happened with me except it wasn't nail polish remover. It was a Magic Rub eraser.

I would appreciate any help. The sight of it on my expensive dining table makes me want to cry.
