Kenmore washing machine Model #110.22652100 not spinning?

Everything appears to be working except for the spin cycle. Water drains and the motor runs but no spin (it agitates fine). Could it be a bad clutch or brake or even gearcase? How would I test for each? The clutch spins when I spin the gearcase coupler by hand ( I can spin the clutch band by hand with some effort). The basket will not spin at all unless I manually release the brake by hand and only then can I spin the tub by hand (the driver brake cam seems a little wobbly). Oh yeah, there was a black soot in the clutch and on top of the gearcase cover when I disassembled the machine – could this be from the brake seizing or the clutch? I was doing a few big loads (blankets) prior to this problem.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.
