How to engage clutch on old sewing machine to engage needle?

I have an older Sears/Kenmore with the model #2142 stamped on the motor in the rear of my sewing machine.
I'd been sewing with fleese when the motor began to hum. A cleaning was due. I did standard cleaning and oiling. My tiny oil can didn't appear to be working so I couldn't use it to oil at the red dots indicating where to oil the motor. I did us a toothbrush, a soft cloth, and Q tips to oil the moving parts. I removed the clutch and oiled behind the flywheel. Now the motor doesn't hum but I may not have something right with the clutch, as something doesn't engage, so the needle doesn't go up and down, but a few times. There is a small screw on the clutch that you do lastly, that may not be connecting as it may not be going in a hole. Anyway... how to get the clutch to operate well so the needle will be engaged?
