How can I fix intermittent start problem on Skoda Felicia?

Hello

First post, and I would be very glad if anyone can help me - my R reg Felicia 1.6 usually starts fine, but occasionally it won't start at all. When it doesn't start there is one 'click' when the key is fully turned, the dashboard warning lights come on in the normal way, but that is it, no engine noise at all. The period it won't start for varies, maybe one minute, maybe an hour. Then when it does start, it is an absolutlely clean start with no problems.

It happens in all weathers, maybe once in 20 or 30 starts.

The garage I went to recommended replacing the starter motor, but that was before he had even looked under the bonnet, so I wonder if there is anything I could get them to check first?

I am not very technical so would have to go to another garage, but can anyone give me some things I should ask them to check for me? (and if anyone knows a good garage in Oxford that would be ideal!)

I'd be so grateful for advice - I don't want to have to get rid of it yet.

you should check the battery connections first, then earth wires from battery to gearbox and chassis. then check live battery wire from battery to starter motor is tight, not showing signs of going green inside. only then should starter motor be checked. nowhere near oxford so pass on that one.
