When I switch on there is a statement comes up on the screen "To Service" and nothing will work.
Can you advise me on any quick checks I can do to establish what the problem is and if I can fix it?
PS I've already pressed the "Reset" button but just come back to "To Service"

I had the same problem a few times, some things to try;

-Take the tape out & blow in the cavity
-Turn it off/on, press reset etc
-Try a fresh tape, sometimes if the tape is worn the camera can't read it and assumes it's broken when in fact it's the tape
