my fridge freezer smells of gas ?

can it be fixed?

there was also a problem i found where the insulating foam used in the construction of fridge cabinets had been mixed incorrectly and a yellow oily substance leaked out of the doors and case - this smelled like gas. the units had to be exchanged

you havent said if your fridge is still working or not - refrigerant gas has no smell, and if it were leaking the unit would rapidly lose efficiency and stop working.
If it has stopped working you may have punctured a gas pipe and the smell is lubricant oil from the compressor leaking out. The most likely source of smell is from spills of food / milk / blood from meat - if this runs down any drain holes in the fridge cabinet it will smell awful - especially if it gets into the evaporator tray of frost free cabinets.
