It does not take pictures....you press the shutter button
and it makes all the right sounds but does not take a picture..
sometimes the flash works and sometimes not.
compactflash has been changed and does't help

this is an older camera..

It sounds like it! Does it help to smack it? If it does, you might have a loose connection in there. If you're not electronically trained, you're opening a literal can of worms by opening a digital camera.
