machine was working fine, then I replaced lid which
had a few cracks near hinge right side, with lid from
much older 601 washer, now machine powers on, washing option lights all working, press start, nothing
happens, cannot put back original lid as this was disposed of, is the lid the problem?

Yes. The later model lid had a hidden magnet to operate the lid reed switch on the right hand side. The older 601 had a push button lid switch in the top panel so didn't have the magnet. You need the magnet to close the switch for machine to start. You will have to buy the correct lid for your model.
