my boiler fires up when it is actually switched off on the timer. It is located in the garage. I can hear the water boiling up. What is wrong

Sounds to me like your frost stat may be kicking in as the weather has been cold and your garage probably un-heated, check the setting of the frost stat, which will look similar to your room thermostat and turn it down, if problem persists it would be wise to have a pipestat fitted in conjunction with the frost stat.
