how can i fix my escort van 1.8 diesel?

every time i go to start my van in mornings i have to pump the pedal for it to start,ive changed the battery for a new one and the fuel pipes.ive been told this could be a lazy starter motor could this be the problem.i dont want to buy a new one if it isnt

Also, dont even touch the pedal or pump the pedal before the engines started on a diesel. and try waiting for the 'click' roughly 10 seconds after the orange lights gone out on the dash before trying to start the engine. Good luck.

I would try the glow plugs.There is a feed wire from the glow plug relay to the plugs check you have a 12v feed for about 10 seconds if thats ok check the glow plugs. engine will be hard to start even with 1 glow plug dead.Also check the earth wire from the battery to the engine.
