How do I re-ignite the pilot light on an old Kingfisher boiler?

This is an old model Potterton Kingfisher CF180 Cat 1N (whatever that means). There are two buttons - one white with a flame motif above a red one with a dot. There is also a dial to the left showing a temperature range from 30 -90 (It has been on 60 for years)..Pressing in the white button seems to release the gas - I can light it with a match - I hold the white button in a few seconds - let go - it then releases slowly - but the pilot goes out! and no whoosh where the whole thing starts working . What is the red button for ?

Dear Brian
I'm afraid the pilot did go out after 20 seconds. What is a thermocouple - and how on earth do I get in to clean the pilot - its a small gap the size of a large postage stamp !!!
I can't even see into it - I just stick in a lighted taper and the pilot goes on.
Thank you for your speedy reply - on a hot Sunday !!!

the white button should be held in for 15/20 secs after the pilot is lit if the pilot still goes out either the pilot needs cleaning or the thermocouple needs replacing the red button shuts off the pilot light (if you have pressed it make sure it has sprung back to the open position sometimes it can stick)
