Refinish plaster lion statues?

I have two plaster lion statues which were originally thickly coated with a grey sand impregnated material to give them a rough stone effect. The finish is falling off in large chips. How can I remove old finish safely. and refinish in a gold metallic look?

maybe you could find a company who could 'sand blast' them to remove the current finish, then paint them gold?
