How can i make my Zanussi ZWF 1621W work?

When you switch the machine on, after a short delay, the "End" light flashes 11 times before temporarily remaining unlit for a few seconds. The light then does the same for a further 11 times, this being repeated until powered off.
We've tried everything logical, all buttons, putting selector to 0, draining the water out that had been left from the previous wash, removing some of the garments in case the load is too heavy.
