How to release a jammed pull cord on Ryobi hedge trimmer?

The pull cord on my Ryobi hedge trimmer RHT2660DA is jammed. I have tried to release it but I have to take off what I would describe as the clutch (the thing that engages with the blade mechanism) to get at it. I can't work out how to do this. Can anybody help?
