Technics RS EH750 cassette deck plays but chews up my tapes.Help!!?

I inherited a hifi seperates system with twin tape deck. On both sides it will only play in reverse then stop after a few seconds and most times chew up the tape in the process. Please let me know what the problem is and how can I fix it?
