Is there a way to overide the basestation pin number , so i can register an extra handset . As i bought them second hand , and never had the pin . The factory setting of 0000 is not valid .

Do a HARD reset on the base unit.

Power off the mains - leave for 1min or so.
Press and hold the PAGE button while turning on the power, until the phone stops beeping (5 tones then a doo-daa-doa)!
Release the PAGE button, then press it 5 times quickly, this should then sound another doo-daa-doo.
Thats it - factory reset to the base unit, PIN back to 0000.
