clutch cable causing blets to brake?

I have a craftsman riding mower. model No, 917.271842

I had to replace the clutch cable and now everytine you ingauge the blads the belt will start to smoke and brake.

The belts are instaled properly and the cable seems to be long enough but it causes the belts to be to tight when engauged and this makes them brake.

How can I fix this problem?

thank you John

The belts are on the right way

There are guard pins next to the pulleys on both mandrels. If the belt is installed outside any one of those pins it will smoke it quickly.
