my husband has just been chipping away to get rid of some ice and he has hit something that has made a sound like air escaping - help what has he done

He stuffed it up. He has punctured the gas pipe and released the cooling gas. Sometimes impossible to repair. If it can be repaired it will be expensive. When will people learn not to remove ice by digging & chipping it away.
