Why is my Renault Megane's ('03 model) engine light on?

Have bought this car 2 months ago (renault megane expression 1.6) and had no problems but now the engine warning light has come on with the service light but there is nothing wrong with the car and how it's running. Is it a dashboard problem? Has anyone else had an apparantly imaginary problem?

Hello,
I have the same problem right now your ignition coil(s) are knackered. It needs to be diagnosed by being put on a machine, this costs between £30 - £40 and then the coils. I had one fail 2 years ago 3weeks later another failed, I was told this was a fault with the Megane's that Renault know about but won't do anything about it, it has something to do with water coming off the bonnet and getting on the coils and shorting them out. I had the other 3 changed at the same time. The same thing is happening again. I am getting rid as soon as it's fixed, don't fancy wasting £400 every 2 years

HI..... If its the EML warning light ie, engine management light which I suspect it is , it means you have a engine management fault. This needs to be checked by someone with the correct equipment, Phone aroound it doesnt have to be a dealer.
It doesnt tell you it needs a service. This car will display "service" in the milometer section when its due.

I think that it is telling you to have the car serviced?
