Do I need a new Singer sewing motor controller?

Hi, I have just used my old singer sewing machine, and whilst I was sat there, without my foot on the motor controller, the machine started running on its own. I unplugged the foot controller and it stopped, but as soon as I plug it back in again the sewing machine starts sewing. Do I have to replace the motor controller, or could it be something simple? The part no. on the controller is 196469.
Thank you

Hello Caron, Undo the foot control and take out the small square suppressor that you don't need and the control will work perfectly

you dont need to depending on model of singer as some models the defective part is at motor, open foot control and find small square or round unit with two wires connected between main wires, remove this unit and problem should be solved
