TEC MA 1350 cash register?

Our TEC MA-1350 tapes are faint, uneven ink & very hard to read even though the ink cartridges are brand new. Can the keys (numbers/letters) be cleaned? Are they worn down so they don't strike hard enough?

Can't see much online if I search but one thought: is whatever drives the ribbon winder doing it's thing? Is there some kind of drive band? Are spools, spindles etc free to turn?
