I have GE built in microwave model#JVM1660WB 005 that when turned on to cook doesn't quite make the normal humming noise, and then after a few seconds I can smell a burnt electrical odor. I'm afraid to leave it on for very long so don't know if its still heating. Would the Magnetron be making the smell?

It could be the Magnetron, the H.V. Transformer, H.V. Diode, or Capacitor. Either way I'd get it checked out by someone qualified.
