The hot water is fine, but the central heating doesnt work the timer says on

I have had a similar problem. Central heating trying to start up and then cutting out. Hot water was fine. The engineer fixed it by replacing a 3 way valve which had simply worn out. It's fine now. Very expensive part though - £90, so not much change out of £200 once it had been serviced.
