my windows xp won't recognize my creative zen vision 30gb?

when i plug in the mp3 player the computer does not know anything is plugged into my usb port. my other mp3's are recognized. my zen screen wants to format, firmare clean and or reboot but when i try it only seems to erase. i don't know if i have any back up software because i cant even find out what the mp3 player needs to get past the screen.
