when on drying cycle the drum turns but apparently no drying heat appears to be generated

could be lots of reasons for this.there is a resettable stat on the dryer ducting.this could of operated.condensor tank could be blocked.element could be blown.belt or blower fan could be seized or broken.by removing the top will give access to most of the above
