How can I fix my BT Freelance XD 500 answer machine?

My BT Freelance XD 500 answer machine does not cut in at my home I have tried it at a neighbours home and it is ok. I have checked all connections and plugged it directley into the Bt master socket and replaced the socket but it still will not cut in. Bt said the line was ok.
