The buttons are stuck down flush with the top of the cistern. I cannot therefore grip the buttons to turn and unsreew. Grateful if a solution could be provided.

Easiest way matey is to get a chamois leather cloth that's give a little bit grip or even a damp towel or something and push down on it as you unscrew it anti clockwise. They can be hard to move but you just gotta keep trying, or even gently with a pair of pliers to start it off, it will come.
