Bad Guide Post: any tips?

I had my Sony VCR in for a repair estimate. The diagnosis was that it needs a new "guide post". Too expensive to have it repaired. Can I do it myself?

Sounds like part of the tape drive to me. Repairers tend to swap out the whole drive. There are a few guide posts and rollers in a VCR. I would guess that one of yours has either come away from the drive base and is wobblying or has excessive wear. VCRs are so cheap now its not really wtth taking them to repairers.
