what detects the water tank level on a Hotpoint TDC32?

Model hotpoint Aquarius condenser dryer TDC32.
The empty water tank light keeps coming on with no water in it! This stops the unit drying but it keeps tumbling. Has anyone come across this before? or know what detects the water so I can have a look at it.
