Dear Dan, If was you mate, I'd take it to an electrician and ask him to check the thing. I was going to sugget brushes but you've already done that so it sounds like it's either arcing due to lose connections ;or something else wrong mate. Look on net for faults regarding this unless oyu have already but I think it sounds like a sparky needs to check it.
