Ihave purchased a house with a veritas 8 alarm fitted, the prev. owner has not left any code nos for it. The alarm does not activate when leaving or entering the house, only beeps when passing the sensor inside the hall. Can you reset and use the alarm when codes not known or failing that how can you stop the sensor from beeping when passing

You need a code.
Or you could Google for a manual and try and reset it yourself, just remember when you open the panel there is mains electricity in there.

Or ring about for a NACOSS or SSAIB installer.
