Boiler sometimes fails to start and needs the reset button pressed. What causes this?

is the pump working ok if not it will not pull the hot water away quick enough and trip the overheat

The thermostat was set to 3. The boiler is about 15 years old and has needed resetting maybe once a year. However it just happened twice in two days.
