Engine Oil - Briggs & Stratton Engines?

I have a range of B & S Engines 3.5 to 14.5 HP and they all seem to specify an SAE 30 Oil. Is this essential in the UK climate, particularly as it is a little used oil now and therfore quite expensive.

B&S now recommend 5w30 synthetic as the best choice for all weather conditions.
