rover 214 immobiliser?

please help
disconnected the battery to replace the starter motor
the car started the first time when i tested the replacement starter but now wont start at all, all that happens is the alarm light on the instrument panel flashes and car wont do anything
it looks like the immobiliser has kicked in for some reason.
the plip hasnt worked since my father has owned the car ,

Rover immobilizers are reset by placing the key in the driver's side door lock. The key is then turned in a sequence of locking and unlocking e.g lock twice, unlock three times. Each model has a different sequence. Try looking on a search engine for the sequence, If not a technical data book should have the answers.
