1999 mercury cougar alarm reset?

We purchased a 1999 Mercury cougar at an in-op sale. It did not have the remote unlock/lock control with it. Now we can't get the alarm to reset so that it will crank. How do we reset the alarm????

Unlock the driver side door with the key. If the door is already unlocked, open the door, lock it, then unlock it. The alarm should quit sounding.
