Push Button toilet just keep overflowing?

The push button cistern unit, fills with water but continues to allow water to run out via the overflow into the toilet bowl. What is the likely problem and how do I resolve it?

Turn off the water mains for a few minutes (30mins maximum) then turn it on again. Did the trick for me.
