How can we stop Optima XM bleeping when power's off?

We've just inherited an Optima XM intruder alarm in new house but it seems to have been wired up strangely. It is wired via the downstairs sockets and has a fuse box attached to it via a cable (seems strange??). Every time we turn the power off to do electrical jobs, the alarm beeps incessantly, causing much distress to our ears and those of our neightbours. Surely this can't be right? Any help appreciated, thank you in advance.

Don't know the answer but you can get a manual here:

its wired correctly through a fused spur from your ring circuit.
Seems like you have a faulty battery in your control box.
Pick one up from maplins!

if the alarm is sounding when the power is disconnected, it suggests that the backup battery is no good, you should replace it as a matter of course if it is over 3 years old.

have you tried typing the alarm code when it beeps?
