Why am I unable to add to or erase the contents of rewritable DVD`s ?

I have an HP DVD 1040 rewritable DVD drive. I can burn DVD+RW dvd`s but cannot add to them or erase the contents. What am I doing wrong

why wont my drive burn cd's/dvd's?
